Scheduling for the Mites means our scheduler and coaches making individual contact with schedulers and coaches from other teams in the region to compare available ice slots and find times when they can play. Most Associations cannot schedule these independent games until all league schedules are completed in early October. Games will be posted as soon as they are scheduled and added throughout the season; we always try to give everyone at least 3 weeks' notice. All youth hockey scheduling is done by VOLUNTEERS. The AYHA Mites do not play in a league in order to try to limit travel for their few away games to closer rinks such as Newark, Columbus, and Charleston. The AYHA Board has decided that for Mites, limiting the travel is more important than the certainty of a league schedule. The only league option for the Mites is the Midwest Youth Hockey League, which is Cincinnati / Dayton-based. Columbus has a house league, but they will not accept Athens as a member because not all of their teams are willing to make the trip to Athens. When a another team comes to Bird Arena, their families have agreed to an additional road trip. When another team hosts us for a game, often their families have agreed to an additional fee for the ice time. They do this because Athens Hockey families have built a reputation for being gracious hosts and friendly guests.
