Squirt, 2010-2011 (Athens Youth Hockey Association | Athens Ohio | Bird Arena)

The weekend of March 11-13 saw the Athens Squirts trek up to Mentor for the Annual Ice of March Tournament. The Squirts were placed in the Gold Division, along with the Elyria Panthers, Butler Valley Dawgs and Parma Flyers. The Gold Division was the equivalent of the A Minor level. By the time the weekend was over, the Squirts left no doubt who the best team was.

The last time I reported in the Squirts were 10-3-1. Since then the Squirts played the tougher part of their schedule, with games against the Newark Generals Major team, CCYHA Minor A team, several CAHA Minor and Major house teams and the CAHA Select B team. In those 12 games the Squirts went 5-6-1. Now the regular season is pretty much over, the Squirts have two big tournaments remaining. February 25-27 the Squirts will be playing in the McCarthy Cup hosted by the Newark Generals. Later on March 11-13 the Squirts will travel to Mentor, Ohio to play in the Ice of March tournament. After seeing their seven game winning streak end two weeks ago, the Squirts used the Christmas break to get refocused and re-energized. That included lots of Wii and Xbox 360 action, at least at my house. The Squirts also welcomed William Elston to the team. On Sunday, January 2, the Squirts welcomed the West Virginia Wild to Bird Arena. The last time these two teams met, the Squirts won 10-5 and 7-1. Could the Wild be just what the Doctor ordered or could the Wild exact some revenge.

Entering this past weekend the Squirts were riding a 7 game winning streak. In front of them were two games Saturday against the Newark Generals and two games Sunday against the CAHA Stars. All games were played at the raucous Bird Arena.

Your AYHA Squirts were back in action on Sunday, December 12. The Squirts were riding a 5 game winning streak when the Easton Rangers came to Bird Arena for a Sunday doubleheader. From the outset the Squirts dominated an outmanned Easton team.
