FIVE IN A ROW
Your Athens Squirts were back on the ice against the Dayton Bombers for two games on December 5 at the friendly confines of Bird Arena. Could the Squirts continue their winning streak? Keep reading to find out.

I apologize for a short article this time, but I had the original article almost finished when I accidently deleted it.

The first game featured Anthony Koping in the goal. Was Anthony up to the task, yes he was. The first period did not have much action with each team getting one goal. The Squirts only goal came from Nicholas Barga. The pace picked up in second period with the Squirts getting breakaway goals from Evan Adams and Chase Sammons. Anthony was perfect the period ended with the score 3-1 favor Squirts. The Squirts continued the onslaught, getting three goals in the period. Two from Chase Sammons and one from Teagan Ries. This was Teagan's first goal as a Squirt. The Bombers managed to get one last goal with less than a minute left in the game. The Squirts win 6-2. Kade Lightner had a couple of firsts during the game. He had his first assist and his first penalty. Evan Adams kept his streak alive of having at least one penalty every weekend. Evan has been in the penalty box so much he has requested a TV or DS to entertain him.

The second featured Teagan Ries in goal. Could the Bombers make this a closer game? Yes they could. Again the first period was slow with the scored tied at 1-1 after one period. However, the pace would quickly pickup in the second period. 22 second into the period the Bombers found the net. They would add two more goals in the period. The Squirts could only answer with two of their own. With Nicholas Barga and Max Cook scoring. At the end of two periods, the Squirts trailed 4-5. Could the Squirts reach deep inside and respond to the deficit. Within the first three minutes Chase Sammons and Nicholas Barga found the net again. With the Squirts now in the lead, 5-4, could they hold on. With the partisan crowd sreaming encouragement, the defense tightened and barricaded the goal. The Bombers could only manage two shots on Teagan. The last shot should have made Sportscenter. The Bomber center somehow made it through the Squirt defenders and had a breakaway heading straight for Teagan. With 15 seconds left in the game the Bomber took the shot on Teagan. It was on target, but Teagan gloved and the game was over. Game. Set. Match.

I am sure the Bombers will be wanting revenge when the Squirts travel to Dayton on February 12.

The Squirts return to the ice on Sunday, December 19, with two games against the Easton Rangers. The Squirts will be riding a 5 game winning streak for the matchup in Bird Arena. I know we are only 6 games into the season, but you can see all of the players starting to gel as a team. The passes are crisper and on target, the goal keeping is much improved, and everyone is playing with more confidence and determination.

This group is fun to watch.
