Columbus, Ohio – Athens Varsity goes undefeated in four games to claim the 2010 Blue Jackets Cup! The Bobcats were off to a rocky start as they faced Northeast Storm in the first game of the tournament. Northeast was up by three seven minutes into play. The tide turned at the end of the first period as Athens Senior, Alex Gates, scored on a power play assisted by Pierce Reeves.       Cincinnati, Ohio - The Athens Varsity Bobcats, seeded 5th in this weekend's BTHL Tournament, upset the 1st seed, Louisville Stallions and finished 2nd overall!  Bobcats defeated Cleveland Lumberjacks and lost in the championship game to Dayton Bombers.      Bobcats faced #4 seed, Cleveland Lumberjacks for their first appearance of the tournament.  The Bobcats came out to play as they scored 4 unanswered goals to quickly build a comfortable lead going into the third period. The Varsity ‘Cats had a busy travel weekend playing in Columbus and Dayton. The Bobcats started the weekend on Friday with a much anticipated game facing off against Hilliard Wildcats at the Dispatch Ice Haus. Hilliard and Athens are ranked 1st and 2nd respectively in the Greater Columbus High School Club Hockey League. The game remained scoreless until period two, Hilliard scored back to back goals. It’s been a busy season so far for the Athens Varsity Bobcats with 33 games played to date this season and finishing the 2009 year with a winning record of 17-11-5. The ‘Cats are proving to be fierce opponents as they stand strong in 2nd place overall in the Greater Columbus High School Club Hockey League, only one point out of 1st. In recent Buckeye Travel Hockey League play where the Bobcats compete in the Midget AA Division, the ‘Cats posted a 2-2-1 record in their last five games. In the spirit of giving and tradition of Athens Varsity Hockey, the team spent time shopping for an Athens area family in need this holiday season.  With lists in hand, players, coaches and parents perused the aisles of Wal-Mart and carefully selected gifts to give four local children, ages 1-12, a special Christmas this year.  Immediately following their shopping excursion, players wrapped the many presents and concluded their afternoon with a delicious potluck feast!
