Policy - Sudden Cardiac Arrest
A Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) occurs when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating, cutting off blood flow to the brain and other vital organs. If not treated immediately, most often by a defibrillator, SCA is fatal.
In 2017, Lindsay’s Law (Ohio Revised Code 3313.5310, 3707.58 and 3707.59) requires all youth sports organizations to provide information to families regarding SCA. Lindsay’s Law is named after former Miss Ohio Lindsay Davis, who suffers from a heart condition and has since dedicated her career to raising awareness of this potentially fatal condition.
General Requirements
Per Lindsay’s Law, all parents, players, coaches, and officials are required to review SCA information provided by the State of Ohio and other sources prior to the start of a youth sport season. Additionally, parents are required to submit a form to their Team Manager stating they have reviewed the above information.
If a player experiences a temporary loss of consciousness or fainting spell before, during, or after any practice, scrimmage, or game, the player must be removed from play. The parent and player are responsible for informing the coach of such an event which occurs outside the coach's observation. The player is not permitted to return to play until a written clearance from a physician (MD or DO), a certified nurse practitioner, a clinical nurse specialist, or certified nurse midwife is received by the coach and by the Athens Youth Hockey Association Registrar. A copy of the clearance will be kept in the team binder.
If a player’s biological parent, sibling or child has had a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), then the player must be removed from play. The parent and player are responsible for informing the coach and the AYHA Registrar of such a situation.
