Squirt Registration and Practice
Squirt registration is for players birth years 2003 and 2004. Squirt practice is typically Mondays and Wednesdays at about 6:30.  Consult the online schedule for exact times.  Practice times are sometimes adjusted to take advantage of seasonal changes in the Bird Arena programming schedule.  The Squirts play full-ice games.  Body-checking is not permitted.  Off-sides is called.

Squirts develop fundamental skating and hockey skills as well as fundamental positioning and team strategy.  Novice players are definitely invited and welcome.  A commitment to learning to play hockey is expected, regardless of the player's skill level.  Because the Squirts include novice players as well as players with multiple years of experience, a variety of practice activities and game opportunities are needed to challenge players with a wide range of hockey skills and experience.  The goal is for all players to progress.  Squirts sometimes share practice ice with the PeeWees (birth years 2001 and 2002).  During shared-ice practices, at the discretion of the coaches, Squirt and PeeWee players may be mixed in appropriate developmental groups.

In addition to home games at Bird Arena, Squirts typically play away games in Ohio (Columbus, Newark, Cincinnati, Dayton),  in Charleston, WV, and in northern Kentucky (Cincinnati-area).  Games are typically on weekends.  For the 13-14 season, we may have enough players for two Squirt teams, which are tentatively labeled as Squirt East and Squirt West on the website.  The practice schedule is under Squirts (All).

First-year players may gain additional practice time by participating simultaneously in Bird Arena's Learn to Play Hockey program.  Ask Registrar Valerie Young ([email protected]) about the Ambassador program, which will partially offset your player's Learn to Play Hockey fee in exchange for you reaching out to other families to encourage them to join AYHA.

Squirt players may also schedule one-on-one hockey instruction with Bird Arena.  Instructors are typically Ohio University D1 and D2 players. Private hockey instruction takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays between 4:15 and 5:00. Contact Bird Arena for more information.
