MYHL League Season Opens
The AYHA Squirt Minor team opened their Midwest Youth Hockey League Season today with a double-header against the Troy Bruins. Both games showed some exciting end-to-end hockey, with the teams within two points of one another throughout both contests. At the final buzzer, they had split the two games, with Troy winning the first 9-8, and Athens winning the second 5-4.
The roster for Athens in Game 1 included Landon, Trey, Jackson, Jorden, Ian, Emma, Kyle, Kayla, Javier, JT, Luke, and Elijah, with Jackson in goal. JT brought his scoring stick to the first game, tallying 6 goals and 1 assist. Other goals in the first game were credited to Landon and Jorden, with assists to Landon, Jorden, Ian, Kayla, and Elijah. The teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the first and 5-5 at the end of the second. The game finished 9-8 to Troy, with three goals scored in the final 2 minutes of play. One of the Troy goals was an empty-netter. One penalty was assessed against Troy, and none against Athens.
Athens added Brady to the lineup for Game 2, placing him between the pipes. Athens took an early lead with two unassisted and unanswered goals scored by Jorden in the first period. Troy came back strong in the second period, scoring 4 goals, while Athens had one tally by Jackson, assisted by JT. The score was 4-3 to Troy at the end of the 2nd. JT tied the game midway through the third (unassisted power play goal), and Ian scored the final goal with 2 minutes left on the game clock, assisted by JT. Three penalties were assessed against Troy; none against Athens.
