Squirts Looking to Get Back on Track
After a weekend off, the Athens Bobcat squirt squad looked to get back to winning ways this past weekend by taking on the Newark Green team on Saturday afternoon.  However, this Newark team was quite prepared for what the ‘Cats had to offer on this day.  A shorthanded Bobcat team struggled to get much generated, while the Newark squad was clicking on all cylinders. In the end, Newark tallied 7 goals to 2 Athens goals.

To take advantage of extra ice time, both teams agreed to play four, 10 minute periods.  For most of the first period, both teams were evenly matched.  However, Newark closed out the period with a sudden offensive fury scoring 3 goals with less a minute left on the clock.  Newark struck first in the second period with some nifty passing that led to a goal.  Chase Sammons got the ‘Cats on the board late in the second period on a short-handed, break-away goal that kept Athens within striking distance.  However, the ‘Cats were unable to cut into the Newark lead in the third.  Newark scored 2 goals, while Sammons broke free for another Bobcat goal with a great fake that fooled the Newark goalie.  Newark added another goal in the fourth period.  Teagan Ries was under fire most of the game and played a good game in goal for Athens.

After the game, both teams enjoyed a shootout exhibition that saw all players get a chance to take a couple of shots on goal.  The shootout was definitely a hit with the players.  Most were a little sad to see it come to an end.   Many ‘Cats scored goals during the shootout and Ries blocked numerous shots.

Due to hazardous weather conditions, Sunday’s games against the WV Wild were cancelled. Next up for the ‘Cats, the long trek to Bloomington, Indiana to take on a very tough Blades team for a pair of BTHL games on January 3rd.  The puck drops at 9:00 and 12:00.
