Bird Arena Closed to Community Until January
Submitted By Valerie Young on Monday, October 19, 2020
Ohio University has announced that Bird Arena is closed to community users and most university users until January. Ice will be laid by November 1, but the Ohio University ACHA D1 Ice Hockey and Club Synchronized Skating teams are the only approved users in November and December, for small-squad practice only. Practice and game play for Athens Hockey and other community and university users are currently scheduled after January 1.

Players registered for age-based teams can expect to have their fee for practice ice through Winter Break credited to their accounts prior to the November 1 installment payment date. Home game slots are scheduled for January, February, and early March. Teams are rostered, and must follow USA Hockey and Athens Hockey policy for all team activities on-ice and off-ice, including policy related to SafeSport and to COVID-19. Contact President Jason Stengel if your team needs a touchless thermometer. Teams can schedule games or ice time at other venues at the expense of the families involved. There is no league schedule organized by the Buckeye Travel Hockey League this season.

High school play is continuing according the the high school season plan, and high school league game play has begun. High school players will not receive a refund of their fee for practice ice because their fees are going towards purchase of limited ice at the much higher prices of rinks in Columbus.

Gamewear has been ordered and families will be notified when it is received.
