Ohio University Credit Union
In 1955, Dr. Harry Crewson, then professor of economics and later president of Ohio University, strongly believed that Ohio University employees needed a place where they could borrow and save at reasonable rates. "In Athens in 1955, there were at least a couple of Agencies on Court Street, which specialized in lending money at high rates of interest. Also, I was aware that some of the non-academic employees at OU were going to these agencies for loans. From the outset, I envisioned a University Credit Union primarily as an organization that would provide reasonable lending and saving facilities for non-academic University employees," stated Crewson in a 1997 letter to the credit union. While Crewson was chairman of the Faculty Advisory Council he received a credit union flier from the Ohio Credit Union League. Having a pioneering spirit and an economic background, he knew this was worth trying. With the approval of Ohio University President John Baker and $25 in hand, Crewson and Ohio University Treasurer Paul O'Brien secured a charter from the State of Ohio. OUCU officially opened for business in 1955 in the cashier's office in Ewing Hall. And so began Ohio's first state-chartered university credit union! Although faculty and administrative employees were initially reluctant to use the credit union, all groups eventually realized the need for credit union services and OUCU's popularity continued to grow. What began as one employee working just one or two hours a day has grown to 72 employees in facilities open five days a week with 24-hour a day, 7 days a week access through twelve ATM machines and account access by phone and via the Internet. By the end of the first year of operation, the credit union had 112 members and $11,879.23 in assets. In December 2007, we reported over 22,000 members and $203 million in assets! We remain through time, people helping people.

The Athens County Convention an Vistors Bureau
There's no place quite like Athens County... Athens County, home to Ohio University and Hocking College, is nestled deep in the Appalachian foothills of Southeast Ohio and was named one of the 12 Greatest Places You've Never Heard of by Mother Earth News in 2006. Just over an hour from Columbus, two from Cincinnati, and three from Pittsburgh, Athens County is a popular destination spot for outdoor enthusiasts, art lovers, history buffs and anyone who wants to escape the fast pace of the city. The lively arts and music scene entertains locals and visitors alike all year round. The eclectic shopping and dining scene is a result of the presence of a large university and rich Appalachian heritage. Hunting, kayaking, bouldering, hiking, cycling and mountain biking are just some of the most popular outdoor activities. Athens County is also known as one of the most haunted places on the planet.
Our mission is to prepare students for off-campus living in the Athens/Ohio University vicinity. With our support during the entire experience, we educate our resident students to recognize personal responsibility in order to successfully become independent members of the local community. As Ohio University Alumni, we feel that we can successfully identify with the needs of our residents while providing value and support for a complete college living experience.
M. Michael L'Heureux has worked with students since 1966, assisting them in financing their educations and finding housing. The internal workings of Hocking College and Ohio University are familiar territory to us. L'Heureux Properties have rented to students and professionals since 1976. Our primary concern is that we surpass the minimum requirements for health and safety. We do our best to make houses functional for students while at the same time bringing wiring and plumbing to standards that will protect uninformed renters. Providing quality housing to young people, as they pursue their college educations and careers, is satisfying for all of us at L'Heureux Properties. We would be happy to assist you in finding housing.
